Celestia® Continues Freudenberg Tradition of Environmentally Friendly Products

Lowell, MA, November 5, 2007 -- Freudenberg North America has launched a campaign to assure that all of its fire barrier products can meet the highest standards of environmental integrity. This commitment is exemplified in the company’s ongoing development and refinement of its Celestia FR product line for the bedding industry.

Celestia fire barriers are designed to provide inherent solutions to the fire barrier process, thereby eliminating any health risk that could result from direct personal contact during mattress use. The term “inherent solution” means that Celestia barrier content is comprised of fiber blends, which in themselves are inherently fire retardant and thereby do not require additives that could prove harmful to the human body upon contact.

The fibers themselves are made of modified Rayon which, at the time of burn, turn partially into Silica, which is nothing but sand. This process creates a char barrier, which serves to suppress the flame, and the fibers release only water molecules, not toxic gasses or other harmful substances. The other fibers in the FR blend are polyesters in nature, which consumers have been using for years.

Because of their non toxic characteristics, Celestia FR materials are considered to be safe for the end user, reflecting Freudenberg’s ongoing environmental concern. Freudenberg has been an environmental leader for many years and backs its commitment with ongoing investments, such that every plant worldwide is ISO 14001 compliant.

The Celestia line of FR materials is manufactured by Freudenberg North America, a division of Freudenberg & Company, based in Weinheim, Germany, and a global leader in the field of technical textiles. In addition to mattress structural components, major markets include hygiene/medical, air and liquid filtration, apparel, home furnishing, tuft and automotive interiors. Freudenberg has operations in 34 countries with annual revenues in the $7 billion range.
