Freudenberg North America Introduces New Celestia Green™ FR Material for Bedding

Durham, NC, January 6,2009 – Freudenberg North America of Durham, North Carolina is introducing a new environmentally friendly Flame Retardant (FR) material for mattresses called Celestia Green. This material, which is expected to be available as of January 1, 2009, joins a long list of Celestia bedding products currently on the market and is designed to meet the most demanding standards of environmental integrity.

In making the announcement, Freudenberg North America’s manager of bedding products, James Frasch, said this adds yet another dimension to Freudenberg’s philosophy which is to encourage the development of products that eliminate the use of chemical content while maximizing the use of fiber that poses no threat to the environment. “All of our products are environmentally friendly”, said Frasch, “but this one also adds the benefit of post consumer waste sourced polyester in the blend”.

Normally, according to Frasch, the fibers used in Celestia FR materials are made of modified rayon and virgin polyester. The rayon turns into silica at the time of burn, essentially the same as ordinary sand. The advantage of using recycled polyester fiber, made from “bottle chip”, instead of generic polyester, means that fibers that might otherwise have been discarded are being rescued. Furthermore, the material’s light green hue helps to differentiate its identity as an environmentally friendly product. According to Frasch any Celestia raw material that does not have specific functional properties can be specified in Celestia Green.

Generically, Celestia fire barriers are designed to provide inherent solutions to the fire barrier process, thereby eliminating any health risk that could result from direct personal contact during mattress use. The term “inherent solution” means that Celestia barrier content is comprised of fiber blends, which in themselves are inherently fire retardant and thereby do not require additives that could prove harmful to the human body upon contact.

The Celestia line of FR materials is manufactured by Freudenberg North America, a division of Freudenberg & Company, based in Weinheim, Germany, and a global leader in the field of technical textiles. In addition to mattress structural components, major markets include hygiene/medical, air and liquid filtration, apparel, home furnishing, tuft and automotive interiors. Freudenberg has operations in 34 countries with annual revenues in the $7 billion range.
